Measuring your carbon footprint is the essential first step toward developing a sustainable future for your business. By quantifying your emissions, you lay the foundation for a carbon reduction or net-zero strategy. This initial effort, though requiring hard work, becomes a powerful tool that can be seamlessly repeated year after year.
Understanding an organization’s carbon footprint is the starting point to identifying areas of the business where emissions, and hence costs, need to be reduced. Measuring the current carbon footprint allows an organization to understand its current position with regards to the GHG risks their current emissions pose, pending legislation and areas in which these emissions can be reduced.
How is a Carbon Footprint calculated?
STEP ONE: UPLOAD YOUR DATA
The first step in using our tool requires data—more data leads to better results. While pristine data sets are ideal, our model, crafted by seasoned environmental management consultants, is adept at handling challenges posed by incomplete data.
Essential data includes energy use, building square footage, full-time employees, and turnover for intensity ratio calculations. This information can be inputted over a timeframe of your choice, either as a company total or, ideally, as a total per facility. The same flexibility applies to other data categories like water usage, waste tonnage, travel, paper consumption, IT procurement, catering costs, and more. Our tool combines simplicity with a comprehensive reporting structure, ensuring an exhaustive and accurate carbon footprint analysis.
STEP TWO: CALCULATE YOUR CARBON USAGE
In the second step, our tool calculates your scope 1, 2, and 3 carbon emissions, forming your comprehensive carbon footprint. Our calculation methodology employs average international carbon factors from government and environmental sources, as well as supplier-specific factors derived from life cycle assessments and peer-reviewed scientific studies. We adhere to UK government conversion factors under the Open Government Licence for public sector information, ensuring compliance.
This methodology aligns fully with the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting standards, guaranteeing accuracy and transparency.
STEP THREE: COMPARE YOUR FOOTPRINT
In the third step, we introduce benchmarking. Now that you have your carbon footprint, how does your organization compare to others in your industry? Our software not only benchmarks your organization but also tracks your progress over time. After inputting your data, the model utilizes a bespoke database containing Scopes 1 and 2 (and some scope 3) emissions data. This database, curated by our partner Compare Your Footprint over years of environmental consultancy, includes anonymized data from annual reports and purchased databases of quoted companies. Benchmarking provides valuable insights into your environmental performance relative to industry standards.
